Coaching to Support Implementation in a Personalized Competency-Based System

How do we build the capacity to maintain and grow our personalized competency-based system? Marzano Research offers on-site and web-based coaching services to support the implementation of personalized competency-based education at the district, school, and classroom levels. Coaching services are available for district and school leaders, instructional coaches, and teachers. Services are tailored to the responsibilities of each role. Coaching can occur in conjunction with any of the professional development services at any phase of the project and support goal setting, progress monitoring, and modifications to support continuous improvement. After an initial site visit, subsequent sessions can be via webinar or additional on-site days.

Coaching Topics for Different Roles

Coaching for administrators
  1. Model the use of tools and strategies for managing a change initiative.
  2. Facilitate planning and design sessions.
  3. Meet with principals and team leaders to provide instruction and support.
  4. Create procedures for classroom observations (entering the classroom, talking with students during class, giving feedback to teachers).
  5. Model observing classrooms and providing feedback to teachers.
Coaching for instructional coaches
  1. Model observing classrooms and providing feedback to teachers.
  2. Model the use of tools and strategies in classrooms.
  3. Assist with planning and focus areas for PLC meetings.
  4. Facilitate small-group and one-on-one conversations about framework implementation.
  5. Assist with creating goals and procedures for classroom observations.
Coaching for teachers
  1. Model use of tools and strategies in the classroom based on student data.
  2. Work with PLCs and leadership teams to support classroom implementation.
  3. Communicate with teachers about the goals and procedures for observations conducted by administrators and instructional coaches.
  4. Observe classrooms and provide feedback to teachers for goal setting and specific strategies for next steps.
